Hawley Road Primary School
Concrete frame & timber structural design for a Challenging school layout
A new build and conversion project, which included a Grade II listed building, presented an excellent opportunity for Walsh Goodfellow to demonstrate our engineering expertise.
The striking Hawley Primary School was the first phase of the Hawley Wharf Masterplan, a canal-side development located at Stanley Sidings in Camden, London.
Walsh served as civil and structural engineers from the initial planning stage all the way through to the completion of the school, which consists of a new three- storey structure alongside the conversion and integration of a Grade II listed building at 1 Hawley Road.
Given the project’s challenging layout, which involved structural stepping and changes in orientation, Walsh opted for a reinforced concrete frame due to its flexibility in managing load transfers and varying load paths after assessing multiple material options.
Throughout the project, a focus on low-carbon design led to a 75% improvement over the Part L requirements at that time.
